Remote internships in India: what the data says about pay, roles, and how many there really are
If you spend any time on LinkedIn you would think most internships are remote now. They are not, and the gap between how it feels and what is actually posted is large enough to be worth writing down.
These numbers come from the same set of 20,392 internship postings we track across India.
Remote is about a quarter of the market
23.2%
of internship postings are remote. 70.8% are on-site. 6.0% are hybrid.
So roughly one in four. That is a real, substantial slice and it is also not the majority anybody seems to assume it is. Remote internships are simply much louder on the internet than their share warrants, because people who work from home post about working from home.
The practical consequence: if you are only applying to remote roles, you have voluntarily removed about three quarters of the market. That is a legitimate choice if you need it, and a costly one if you are doing it by default.
Remote does not pay a premium. It pays a discount.
This was the finding that surprised us most when we first ran it.
| Where | Postings | Median stipend |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | 332 | ₹18,000 |
| Gurugram | 227 | ₹15,000 |
| Hyderabad | 108 | ₹14,250 |
| Mumbai | 173 | ₹12,500 |
| Delhi | 178 | ₹11,000 |
| Remote | 991 | ₹10,000 |
| Pune | 162 | ₹10,000 |
| Jaipur | 70 | ₹9,000 |
Remote sits at ₹10,000, level with Pune and Noida, well under Bengaluru's ₹18,000.
The promise of remote work was that you could earn metro money from anywhere. In internships that is not what happens. You get roughly small-city money and you save the rent, the deposit, and two hours a day of commuting. Depending on your situation that can still be the better deal in absolute terms - just do the arithmetic rather than assuming remote is a straight upgrade.
Whether remote exists at all depends on your function
| Role | Postings | Remote share |
|---|---|---|
| Data science & analytics | 394 | 46.4% |
| Software engineering | 2,977 | 29.6% |
| Design | 1,045 | 27.9% |
| Marketing & growth | 3,467 | 26.0% |
| Sales & business development | 1,759 | 23.9% |
| Human resources | 2,830 | 21.2% |
| Operations | 411 | 13.6% |
| Accounting | 300 | 4.3% |
Nearly half of data and analytics internships are remote. Accounting is 4.3%.
If you are in a function near the bottom of that table and you have set a hard remote filter, you are not competing for a smaller pool, you are competing for almost nothing. Worth knowing before you conclude that nobody is hiring.
So what do you do with this
- If remote is a genuine constraint - health, location, caring responsibilities - lead with the functions that actually go remote. Data, engineering, design, marketing.
- If remote is a preference, drop the filter for a few weeks and see what happens. Three quarters of the market opens up.
- Do not expect a stipend premium for remote. Budget for ₹10,000 and treat the saved rent as the real benefit.
- If you are in operations, accounting or anything with a physical component, plan around on-site and negotiate flexibility later rather than filtering for it up front.

How we counted
Everything here comes from 20,392 internship postings aimed at candidates in India, collected mostly between April and July 2026.
Stipend figures use only the 3,178 postings where the employer stated a monthly amount themselves. Our system generates an estimated range when an employer states nothing, and all 16,387 of those estimates are excluded from every number on this page. City medians need at least 40 stated stipends to appear.
Role families are our own grouping. The underlying data carries a few overlapping labels from different sources, for example "Software Engineering" and "Engineering", so we merged the obvious duplicates before calculating shares. Role families with fewer than 300 postings are not shown.
This is what one tracker sees, not a census of Indian internships. If something looks wrong, tell us.
Questions people ask us about this
How many internships in India are remote?
About one in four. Across 20,392 internship postings we tracked, 23.2% were remote, 70.8% were on-site and 6.0% were hybrid. Remote internships are far more visible online than their share of the market suggests.
Do remote internships pay less in India?
Yes, relative to the big metros. Remote internships have a median employer-stated stipend of ₹10,000 a month, against ₹18,000 for Bengaluru and ₹15,000 for Gurugram. Remote pays roughly the same as Noida, Pune, Ahmedabad and Kolkata, so the benefit is saved rent and travel rather than a higher stipend.
Which internship roles are most likely to be remote in India?
Data science and analytics is the most remote-friendly at 46.4% of postings, followed by software engineering at 29.6%, design at 27.9% and marketing at 26.0%. Operations at 13.6% and accounting at 4.3% are the least remote-friendly.
